As I was taking my leave of Holly and Tom, they made me promise
to mention the University of Georgias
unofficial Web site -- http://www.dawgnation.com.
The site is maintained by an anonymous "dawg master."
Saturday felt different. The air (and early afternoon rain) felt
like early August, but the sunlight that fell on the red pennants of Georgia and purple
and gold of LSU was fall light.
A young invasion of Georgia fans, parked with LSU RVs in the
visitors/free lot, provided a long afternoon of good-natured insults.
Holly Lunsford and Tom Lamford had made the long drive from
Bulldog country in Hollys shiny red truck. Tom was cooking on a small grill near a
Bulldog banner that flapped in the heavy air.
"At Georgia," Holly said, "a lone trumpet plays
the first seven notes of the Battle Hymn of the Republic (Glory Glory to
Old Georgia) and, then, the rest of the band joins in. Gives you goose bumps."
"Go home, Georgia!"
"After we win the game," Tom yelled back without
looking up from his cooking.

A couple of hundred yards away, Lindsey Greesons "Big
Red Party Bus" loomed over the other motorized campers. First outfitted with a roof deck for NASCAR races, there may have been 40
Georgia fans on top of Greesons bus. Greeson, who is in the mobile home business,
hands out beer cozies that say, "We aint trailer trash." |
