It began as a routine assignment for veteran reporter James Featherston. But at the sound of gunshots, Featherston found himself covering one of the biggest stories in American history.

"President Kennedy has been assassinated," read the first paragraph of a United Press International story transmitted Nov. 22, 1963, hours after the popular president was slain.
